Study Permits

Foreign students are required to obtain a Student Permit prior to their arrival to Canada and prior to engaging in a course of studies with a Canadian educational institution. In applying for the Student Permit, individuals are required to provide information about the educational institution they intend to study at and a letter of enrollment to the program. They are required to demonstrate sufficient financial resources to cover the tuition fee and living expenses for the period of their study in Canada as well as demonstrate the reason for studying in Canada.

It is important to note that the duration of the intended studies in Canada determine the type of visa you must apply for. If you intend to study in Canada for a period that is less than 6 months, you must seek a Temporary Resident`s Visa. If the period is longer than 6 months, then you must seek a Study Permit, which, if issued, may be extended by way of applying for the Study Permit extension through the Canadian Immigration Centre in Vegreville, Alberta.

Each student will be required to undergo medical examination prior to having their Study Permit issued.

Students who have studied in Canada for over 6 months are eligible to apply for an open Work Permit through the Canadian Immigration Centre in Vegreville, Alberta. Spouses of students in Canada are also allowed to apply for a Canadian Work Permit.

Students who have been working in Canada for at least one year after having studied in Canada for at least two years and, as a result of such studies, obtained a Canadian diploma or certificate, may apply for permanent residence in Canada under the Canadian Experience Class Category.
