Canada Extends NAFTA Work Permit to 3-Year Renewable

Under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) provisions, a citizen of the United States and/or Mexico can apply for quicker and easier temporary entry to Canada under four categories: Business Visitors, Intra-Company Transferees, Professionals and Traders & Investors. The NAFTA work permit provides a great opportunity for North American professionals to temporarily work in Canada.

The conditions for professionals seeking to work in Canada temporarily have now changed under new regulations. Professionals may now receive work permits for up to a period of three years with the option to renew afterwards. This extension eases the process for Canadian employers who can now have access to the necessary labour skills for longer since previously, work permits could only be granted for a 12 month period with renewal thereafter.
